The wild beauty of Monte Nieddu in San Teodoro
Sardinia is a land to explore especially by excursions, following nature trails and entering inland to capture the authentic essence of a unique island.
San Teodoro is a good starting point for this kind of experience, so even those who have never been in Sardinia will find many attractions in this area.
Behind the town of San Teodoro rises Monte Nieddu, a mountain whose peak reaches 970 meters above sea level, an invitation for who likes trekking or mountain biking, because the wonderful top view fully repays the effort required to reach the peak.
Hiking on Monte Nieddu
Nieddu, in Sardinian language, means black and this name comes from the dark vegetation that covers the mountain, however the landscape on Monte Nieddu is very varied: forests of oaks, cork oaks, the peculiar fauna (including wild boars, ravens, peregrine falcon and golden eagle), the scent of oleander and juniper set up a scenario of pure beauty.
The nature trails are recommended for families with children who can easily reach Vedetta Palemonti, vantage point from which to admire the marine area of Tavolara and continue towards the natural waterfalls of Rio Petrisconi.
The water, over the centuries, has carved the granite rock creating natural pools where you can swim; in other words Monte Nieddu gives the opportunity to make a dive into the scenic wonders of Gallura.
The mountain also testifies an important stage of Sardinian history: in the XIX century, many entrepreneurs came here to produce charcoal and so they built the steps to facilitate the transport of coal from the mountains to the beaches of San Teodoro. This path is known as "the charcoal path" and Monte Nieddu trails one of the most popular of the island.
Following the traces of the past you will get the coveted destination, a wonder of nature that allows us to embrace sky and sea with a glance.
